We’ve devised a quick Contour review, rounding up the key information on the video performance, GPS system, Bluetooth connectivity and design for you. If you’re in the market for one of the best action cameras around, read on!

Video Performance 

When all is said and done, people buy cameras for the video quality. As much as bonus features can sway opinion one way or the other, if the playback is unsatisfactory, what’s the point?

Fortunately, this isn’t a concern when using this helmet camera. The Contour Plus 2’s video quality is certainly comparable with some of the other top action cameras. Full HD 1080p at 30fps and HD 720p at 60fps are the most likely resolutions of choice, with both providing vibrant high-definition video.  

A rotatable, 170° wide-angle lens ensures none of the action is excluded from the frame, so all you need to do is point and shoot. The built-in microphone captures audio, which can be augmented with the purchase of an external microphone (not included). 

Its removable, rechargeable Lithium-ion battery will give around 2–2½ hours battery life; plenty of time for capturing a ski session, scuba dive or motor race, whilst also offering the option of stocking up on spares for long-haul shoots.

As for memory, the Plus 2 stores approximately 8 minutes of 1080p@30fps video per GB of space. A 4GB MicroSD card is included in the pack, allowing for around half an hour of video, but this head cam is compatible with MicroSD cards up to 32GB for a potential 4 hours 20 minutes Full HD video recording. Not too shabby!

GPS

The Contour+2’s built-in GPS is a camera feature that is unique in a head cam context, opening the door to whole new perspectives of your action sports videos.

Essentially, the internal GPS system tracks multiple variables, such as your location, speed, elevation and distance travelled. By using the free-to-download Contour Storyteller video editing software, you can then add these variables to your HD video in the form of an overlay.

The advantages of this of course, are that it gives your videos context. Where on earth did you find such good surf? What's the altitude of that off-piste run you’re carving? You took that corner how fast!? When it comes to sharing your footage with friends, this information can only inspire more awe for your antics, whilst adding a more professional essence to the video.

Bluetooth & App

Users have largely embraced the introduction of mobile connectivity to the best helmet cameras, with Drift Innovation, GoPro, iON and Sony all opting for Wi-Fi enabled mobile usage. This Contour camera differs slightly in this respect, with its own smart device connection operating via Bluetooth.

Once you’ve downloaded the App and updated your cameras firmware, the connection of the Contour Plus 2 to iOS or Android devices can commence. 

As it works via Bluetooth, it is extremely easy to pair the camera to the smart device. Simply switch on the smart device's Bluetooth, before holding down the Bluetooth button on the camera for five seconds. This will put the head cam in 'pairing' mode, where it will automatically detect and connect to the smart device. 

Once the camera is paired, you can simply press the Bluetooth button to switch it on and off. The smart device will then act as a portable camera screen, allowing accurate view-finding, setting modifications, and the ability to start and stop recording.

Also displaying the camera’s battery life, memory space and GPS signal, this connectivity amply compensates for the lack of a built-in screen, ensuring pretty much complete hands-free functionality. 

Design

Perhaps one of the more discreet and unobtrusive action cams out there, the Contour+2’s bullet-shaped design is simple lightweight, and generally pretty cool to look at. Operation of the camera is as straightforward as it gets, adhereing to the camera’s minimalist design. A locking slide-record switch controls the camera; when it’s pushed forward it’s recording, when it’s pushed back the camera switches off. It’s that easy.

Extending from the cylindrical body of the camera is a slotted mounting system for use with Contour’s wide variety of mounts. A ¼” thread on the bottom of the camera enables attachment of the Plus 2 to standard tripod, or universal camera mounts for some extra versatility.

The Plus 2’s water resistance means it is fine for motorcycle touring on a rainy day, but the included 60m Waterproof Case is necessary for scuba diving and water sports. Often an additional purchase, free with the Contour Plus 2.
