What will I need to have before buying a helmet camera?

You will need two things before buying a wired helmet camera. A camcorder (or for some a portable media device) and a three plug connecting cable that normally connects your camcorder to your TV if you are playing camcorder images on your TV. The three plug connecting cable has a jack that goes into the AV IN socket on your camcorder and at the other end, three (red, yellow and white) phono plugs.

What is the main difference between your helmet cameras?

Helmet cameras come in all shapes and sizes. Our aim is to provide you with a comprehensive range of cameras from a variety of manufacturers.

Our wired helmet cameras themselves, range in price and also in image quality, from the entry level ActionCamera 420 to the ActionCamera 520 and 520 Low Light. The 420 TV line camera is very popular for those new to extreme sports filming. The images are near camcorder quality and are better than most helmet cameras on the market. The 520 and 520 Low Light TV line cameras are extremely popular with TV production companies and extreme sports websites who demand the best. Our 480 TV line helmet camera fills that precious middleground.

Which one should you go for? That depends on whether you want a good entry level helmet camera or are prepared to pay that bit extra to get better quality images.

Can I use any camcorder or portable recording device?

No. Our wired helmet cameras can only be used with camcorders or recording devices which have an AV IN socket on them. Please check with us to make sure that your camcorder has an AV IN. We have included a list of camcorders from a variety of manufacturers in our website so you can check whether yours is compatible or not.

See the below photo illustrating the AV IN socket:

How are your wired helmet cameras powered?

Our wired helmet cameras are powered by a battery pack that requires 8 AA batteries. The batteries are not included in the package. With a fresh set of batteries, the helmet camera should normally be able to operate for 10 hours. This may alter depending on the temperatures in which the helmet camera is being used. We would recommend that you invest in rechargeable batteries if you plan to make frequent use of your helmet camera.

If using rechargeable batteries, get the 10 AA battery pack as rechargeable batteries are 1.2v rather than the 1.5v from standard AA batteries.

Otherwise, we have a range of battery accessories such as 12v rechargeable battery packs and mini batteries to help with your filming.

How does the camcorder connect to the wired helmet camera?

The below image illustrates how the helmet camera connects to your camcorder:

How long will the batteries last?

With a fresh set of batteries, our wired helmet cameras should normally be able to operate for 5-8 hours. This may alter depending on the temperatures in which the helmet camera is being used.

Do I need to use a helmet?

No. Our helmet cameras come with a strong velcro helmet mount to attach the camera to your helmet. The package also includes a camera stand that can be used to attach the camera to a vehicle. If you want to use the camera without a helmet, our wired helmet cameras can be used with a specially made headstrap. This can be found under the Mount/Head Mounts section of this website.

We would however recommend that you use a helmet if you take part in an extreme sport.

Can I remotely control my camcorder?

Yes. A specially designed LANC Remote Control exists specifically for extreme sports. This remote (v1.6) can be used with most modern camcorders with a LANC socket. Check with us before purchasing. The remote will enable you to stop and start recording via your camcorder so you can avoid minutes or hours of wasted footage and save your camcorder for the special moments.

The below image is an image of a LANC Remote Control. They come in a v1.4 and v1.6 and can be purchased from our Accessories section:

Are your helmet cameras waterproof?

All of our wired helmet cameras are IP68 waterproof. The wireless ones are splashproof as is the DigiMiniCam.

Do your helmet cameras come with a warranty?

Yes. Our helmet cameras come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty. As long as the camera has been used in the way it was intended, we will issue a replacement product, no questions asked.

What do I do if the lens mists up?

Occasionally, due to differences in temperature between the camera and the outside surroundings, the lens can mist up. To avoid this, unscrew the camera lens before setting out and spray both sides of the lens with an Anti-Fog spray. This spray can be purchased from the Accessories section of this website.
